Selection starts with total head — the vertical lift from the water source to the tank, plus friction losses along the pipe run and through every bend and fitting. A three-storey building with a long horizontal run can need more head than a taller building with a short, straight riser, which is why floor count on its own tells us very little.
Suction conditions are the second factor. A pump lifting from a sump behaves differently from one drawing off a borewell or a tanker connection, and self-priming and monoblock designs suit different situations.
